What the heck is this MP3 fuss all about then ??

MP3 is a new audio format, that achieves 1/10 compression of the original soundwave, with virtually no loss of quality. It does that by removing from the sound the frequencies that the human ear can't detect. This makes it finally possible to spread audio files through the internet with Hi-Fi quality plus extremely near-CD sound quality!!

A maximum quality MP3 takes approximately 1Mb of disk space per minute of music, but most of the times it takes slightly less.... So expect a 3 minute music to be 3Mb in size.
This format is used to distribute home made music with Hi-Fi quality, and it can also be used to distribute commercial copyrighted music. As you can expect, this is illegal. Anyway, with current home speed transfers, only very wealthy and pacient people try to get full CD's in MP3 format from the web, so there should be no big problems... Besides, it's always nice to hear one or two tunes from a CD as MP3, before going out to splash money on it.
